Storage Solutions: Kitchen

Do you remember what my kitchen looked like? Well, I’ve thought of a solution for my couple-few cupboards storage issue. This requires some backstory.

To Isobel’s birthday party, Stargirl brought my favouritest chocolate chip cookies in a glass canister. And I get to keep it. And do you know the first piece of advice anyone will tell you when they hear you’ve got mice? Don’t have any open food. That’s pretty impossible in a household with a child who subsists almost entirely on snacking.

But I could put that one canister to good use. Now, do I put the flour in it? There’s too much to all fit. The pasta? Nope, it’s too long. The raisins? What do I put in this thing? I tore at my hair, wishing for a different size.

Actually lots of different sizes. And then, I had a brain cloud storm.

What if I could take this area above the fridge:

And add a drawer to the bottom of it, (on runners so that I can pull it out to full width of the fridge top) and fill it with various unmatched glass canisters. I’m talking nothing is in a box or bag anymore - everything’s all got it’s own air-tight container with a sweet-ass little identification labels. Personalized.

I’d need a step-ladder, to get to my lovelies way at the back, but it just might be worth it for kitschiness, alone. Or lack thereof. Then, when I move? I could find an awesome cupboard or cabinet to display all of my glass wares in.

Then again, part of my brain is toying with the thought of just having the cabinets redone.

I like it. Will you get tired of having to climb up for that drawer though? Well, even so, you cant be that choosy I guess. I do love the idea. I hope you do it!

That sounds like a terrific idea! Wondering if I could use that myself…

I like the drawer idea.
But in regards to redoing the cabinets, dont, just get nice new hardware. Seriously CHANGES things. Like, go for a brushed silver, it will looks radacious with your future colour scheme.

i would suggest not putting much time, money and effort into renovating an apartment.
especially one that you might not stay in long term.
while it might make your day to day living a bit prettier… you’re really just wasting money.
even painting a rental IMO is a waste of time and money.

and since this is a mouse ridden tiny tiny little place that you’re likely to grow out of very shortly, i especially would save the money. put it into a fund for rent at a better place.

even changing the hardware on the cupboards… that’s like, what? 12 handles at least… at $5 each, that’s $60.
and why? to upgrade a place for a building owner that can’t even keep the building not infested with bedbugs and mice? fuck him.

whew. sorry ’bout that… but i can not support the idea of spending your own money on fixing up a place you don’t own.
if things NEED to be done, then you get the landlord to pay for it and do it for you. that’s the thing about rentals… you can’t take it with you, so in exchange you don’t have to pay for it.
